It can be difficult to do anything for yourself when grieving. However, it is important to take care of yourself during this time. This could be as simple as making sure you’re eating enough throughout the day, to taking the time to go on a walk. Here are some tips for self-care:
Going for a walk, or stepping outside for some sunlight and fresh air can be very rewarding due to the change in scenery. Exercise also can help brighten your mood and alleviate tension while also focusing on your health. Asking a friend to come on a walk with you can also be more motivating and engaging. Other forms of exercise such as yoga can also be a great way to get your body moving and help relive emotional pain.
Having trouble sleeping is also common within those who are experiencing grief and loss. In order to continue caring for yourself it is important to employ some strategies to improve your sleep. Exercising is one strategy that can improve your sleep as your body uses energy. Another strategy is to limit your caffeine intake after 4pm and visual intake after 8pm (TV, mobile phone etc.)
Practice Deep Breathing
Deep breathing helps with stress management, anxiety and tension. It can be done almost anywhere by breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth. Picture your tension and stress begin to leave as you exhale. You will notice how much more relaxed you are after a few minutes of controlled, deep breathing.
